Watching Movies with Kids

I am in love with the movie Enchanted. So, today when my saint of a sister (did I mention she came over on her day off to babysit - and brought supper for us with her!!) came over, she had to see it.

My girls could have seen a movie 50 times, read a book a hundred times - and still they pepper you with questions as though it is their first time. Every time.

The heroine Giselle shows up at the ball - Eden asks "Where did she get ready?" (I don't know!)

The single dad is at the ball, and Madison asks "Who's taking care of [his daughter] Morgan?" (um... a babysitter?)

and my favourite....

from Madi: "When the people who play in this movie kiss... are they really kissing?"

At one point I had to ask a question. There is a part where Giselle has just realized her feelings for Patrick Dempsey (hello! I could have told her about Dr. McDreamy ages before she clued in!) and is daydreaming about him. I said to Madi - "What do you think she's dreaming about?"

Her response? "Probably Pip the Chipmunk."

Oh, I love the innocence! As annoying as the questions can be after the 500th "why?" - I hope the questioning never ends.

Saturday in Review

So today I spent the day in Toronto at Africa Inland Mission's Art Show Fundraiser. I had a couple of pieces in the show and was photographing the event for them. I was amazed by the quality and diversity of work! Wow! Makes me want to learn to paint, carve, sculpt, do batik, draw.... I feel inspired!

I left around 8:30pm - right during Earth Hour. It was strange to drive by the CN Tour and it to be in total darkness. I would have taken a photo but.... you wouldn't have seen anything!

Then what made me happy was I listen to k-lite fm on the way home and they have old music on Saturday nights. I love (LOVE!) songs I can sing to - I'm a horrible singer, but a fantastic car singer if you know what I mean. I like to belt it out in my safety zone of my car. So I was completely happy when "Thriller", "YMCA" and other such gems were played. Sweet!

Speaking of Thriller - the other day some friends and I were discussing our memories of the Thriller video. Remember how scary it was? Music videos were still fairly new - and this was terrifying to watch!

All in all - a good day!

Sonia's Family

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting Sonia and her adorable kids - Alishia (Sonia - you'll have to let me know the correct spelling!) and Aidan. Alishia is about 2 and a half and loves to talk! She had me laughing from before I has even taken off my shoes. And Aidan - he's just a laid back little guy. Watches his sister and mom with awe and takes it all in. Cute!

Sonia told me how they had done family photos in a formal studio setting for Christmas - and how that was such a negative experience for them. As a mom of two active kids myself I know how hard it is to ask a kid to sit still, tilt their head and smile nicely. Isn't going to happen. These experiences usually leaves everyone involved frustrated. This is one of the reasons I shoot like I do... when I am photographing kids, the first thing I do is connect with the kids. I get down at their level and play or listen to them. They need to trust me. Then I'll pull out my cameras - and depending on their age I may take a quick photo and show them it (so they understand what I'm doing) or explain the camera a little bit to them - I've even let kids take a couple photos. And then we simply play! Because - I know for me, this is how I want to remember my kids. How they behaved, felt and experienced life at this stage.

When I left, Alishia was sad that I couldn't stay to have a snack of cheerios with her. And you know - I was a little bummed too. She was a sweetie! But after every photo shoot with kids - I'm anxious to get home to my own two girls and give them an extra dose of loving!

Professional Photos of Your Children

I love blogs! I use bloglines to keep track of all the blogs I read. Basically it's a free website where I register all the blogs I read - and then they let me know when there is a new post.

All that to say, I saw today on my friend Jennifer's blog this great article from Real Simple magazine. Follow the link here (always interesting to see everyone's comments about an article!) or read below...

I’ve never forgotten an invaluable piece of advice that I heard from an older friend right after my first child was born. She told me, “One of my greatest regrets about my children’s childhoods was that I didn’t have more professional pictures taken.”

“You didn’t take many pictures?” I asked.

“I took tons of pictures,” she said, “but the fact is, professional photographs are so much better than even the best snapshots.”

I absolutely agree—professional photos are better. And keeping her advice in mind, ever since my daughters were born, I’ve been zealous about getting their photos taken professionally at least once a year.

While it’s a lot of fun (and also a pain) to take pictures myself, it’s terrific to have some pictures that are truly excellent. These photos don’t take the place of the on-the-spot pictures that I take myself—I still take scads of photos at birthday parties, first days of school, on the slide, with a popsicle—but these pictures memorialize my children’s childhoods in a different way.

Plus they make great family gifts. I can never figure out a good present for the grandparents and great-grandparents, but they always love to get a really great photograph—especially the relatives who don’t often get a chance to see the girls in person.

Also, research shows that one way to boost your happiness is to reflect on happy times, and looking at photographs helps keep memories more vivid.

It’s a splurge, of course. Professional photos aren’t cheap.

However, I figure that the money I spend on these photographs will strengthen family bonds, enhance happy memories, and capture the fleeting moments of childhood. They give me more pleasure than practically any other purchases that I make. That strikes me as pretty good happiness bang for the buck.

A friend’s family had another great photography tradition. For her whole life, at every milestone, her parents took a picture of her and her brother sitting exactly the same way on their front stoop. It’s fascinating to see them change through the years. Along the same lines, the artist Nicholas Nixon took a photograph of his wife and her three sisters once a year for 33 years. The collection of these photographs, The Brown Sisters, is riveting.

Getting professional photos take is a great example of the tiresome fact that happiness takes thought and effort. These photographs are easy to arrange; in the scheme of things, not terribly expensive; contribute greatly to our family happiness—and yet it probably never would have occurred to me to do it if my friend hadn’t suggested it.

Have you ever had your child's professional photograph taken? Did you think it was worth the expense and trouble?

Happy Easter!

I came home from my Vegas trip last weekend right into Easter festivities. Yeah! Friday we had a Good Friday service and brunch, Saturday we went to our friend's home for the afternoon and today we had a sunrise service at church (way too early!) before heading out to my parents for the day. The girls are at such a fun age - they loved hunting for eggs! And at my parents church (yes - we did a double header this morning!) when they asked for what things the kids were thankful for - Eden (my 3 year old) raised her hand and said her Easter dress. I'll get a photo of them in their new dresses soon - my kids get to my parents house and immediately strip so that they can dive into the dress up box!

It was a good day today - a lazy Sunday afternoon gabbing, laughing, watching the kids performances, enjoying family and food.

I hope each of you also had a wonderful Easter celebration! Tomorrow we head out to my in-laws farm for another dinner - I may explode after all this good food this weekend!!

I will post more photo slate r- but loved this one of my Madi and her cousin Hannah under the kitchen table in their "fort".

Colleen's Girls

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Colleen and her two gorgeous daughters. Her one daughter is moving to Australia soon - so we wanted to get these photos done before she left. It was fun to spend part of the afternoon with them - not only are they stunning, but they're fun! I loved the goofy headbands they brought along... reminded me of Colleen's best friend's Darlene's sunglasses back in January (link). Actually one of Colleen's daughters is in Darlene's sunglasses photo - she had come along to make them smile that day!

Thanks for a fun time today!

Admired...

I just found out I have two photos "Admired by Beckstead". David Beckstead has been voted one of the top 10 photographers in the world, and he posts photos on this website that inspires him. I was thrilled to find two of mine were selected - see for yourself here...

This is from Chris & Arlene's wedding in September at Liuna Station in Hamilton. I tried to replicate the photo above with Chris & Arlene's pose below. Click below to see on Beckstead's site...

And this is from Joel & Rachel's wedding last summer. The first time Rachel saw Joel he was on stage at the University of Waterloo - so this is where we did their photos. This wall is at the back of the stage.... (this is also Joel's favourite photo) Click below to see on Beckstead's site...

Home Sweet Home!

I'm home from my week in Vegas - and it feels great to be back!

Last Friday Jen, Sandra, Beth and I flew out to Las Vegas. We spent the weekend in the Grand Canyon and at the Valley of Fire. Amazing! Sunday afternoon our conference started and then it was jam packed days of workshops, networking and tradeshow at the largest photography convention. It was great! I have so many ideas and thoughts to now make time to sit and mull over and implement! Can't wait!!

Here are a few photos of my week... (more to come)

Here is a fun shot Beth took of me soaking in the sun...

Viva Las Vegas!

Well, tomorrow bright and early (well, early I don't know about bright...) Sandra, Jen, Beth and I are heading out to Las Vegas! We're going for the WPPI conference - the biggest tradeshow in photography jam packed with seminars, workshops, and more. Last year was so amazing - I can't wait to go back and learn, learn, learn!! And last year we did some sight seeing and this year we are starting our week with a weekend at the Grand Canyon. As soon as we get in tomorrow afternoon, we're picking up our rental car and escaping the neon lights for desert sand instead! Can't wait!!

I will be checking my emails periodically this week - but the lovely Carolynn (my sanity and support!) will be more than able to help you with anything you may need.

Recently my friend Rachelle and I decided to get creative and have some fun. What is more fun than candy? Krista's youngest, Eden, helped us out! She behaved soooo well, i wonder why?? (hehe)
Here are some of my favourite shots from the day.
We ate a lot of candy after - and it was fantastic!

Thanks!

Back in the Fall I received word that I won 4 of the Reader's Choice Awards in the Hamilton Spectator (link). Well, last week or so I got the certificate thing in the mail - and today I picked it up from getting framed. When I saw it I felt all sappy - thinking how amazing YOU all are. Thank you again for supporting me and the business. I look back over the last two and a half years and I am blown away by the people I have met along the way that have quickly moved from clients to friends - and how many people have supported me.

Story - I was out shopping in the States with some girlfriends, and I bumped into an old college friend. He wanted to swap business cards - but I didn't have any. I turn to my friends - and they open their wallets and they pull out my business cards. They carry them around and promote my business for me. Wow. I love my friends! It's support like that - gets me all choked up. Love.

Anyhow, got me to thinking... I think we may need another KJP party to beat these winter blues! Maybe it should be a twice a year event rather than annual. If you don't know what I'm talking about - check here: link and then let me know if you're in!

Love to you all!

Looking Ahead

So, tonight Mark and I were talking through the next week's commitments - I have lots to look forward to! Here is a photo look of my top ten things I'm anticipating in the next week...

1) Today starts March Break!! Hooray! These photos were taken the day before school started this year - I can't wait to just play with the girls again over the Break.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

2) Saturday I am going downtown Hamilton in the early am with a Redeemer University student I've been asked to mentor on his final art project. He's doing it on downtown - one of my passions! (Side note - I hope to continue a photo project I started on the Beasley neighbourhood a couple years ago in the next couple months. Did you know that this neighbourhood in Hamilton is one of the poorest in all of Canada?)

Photobucket

Photobucket

3) Then Saturday I have a date with my sanity - also known as Carolynn. Carolynn and I have been friends since grade nine and it is so great to work together now.

Photobucket

4) Then I move to a birthday party for one of our good friends - Aliah! How this girl is 4 already is beyond me! Aliah and Eden are just a few months apart and have always fought like they were true sisters! The last couple times we've gotten together though there have been less fights - my baby is growing up!

Photobucket

5) Sunday the girls and I are going to my sister's to kick off the March Break with a PJ party! When I was looking up pics of my sister - I found this old one which is one of my favourites! It's when I was just very newborn - with mom and Marcie knitting. Maybe my dad has a bit of a Photojournalistic eye too!

Photobucket

6) Tuesday I get to speak to a bunch of high schoolers on photography. So I'm bringing my Beth along with me to inspire them!

Here's a photo our friend Amanda snapped of us recently

Photobucket

7) Then Tuesday I am getting together with Madi's boyfriend, Noah from JK and his family (Lorri & Taegan). They moved away and we miss them so much!!

(Note that Noah is flipping the bird here! Hilarious!)

Photobucket

8) Tuesday night is me and my girls! Monica, Cherie and I try to get together a few times a year - despite the distance in driving now. These two are my encouragement, my fellow dreamers, and source of joy! The three of us all love photography and it's always a given that everyone brings photos to show what they've been up to lately. Can't wait to gab and gab and gab...

Took this when we were all together for our summer getaway (to house sit for Sandra -0 ha!)

Photobucket

And a better look at the beautiful Cherie

And a fun one of Monica...

9) Thursday my friend Sandra is sleeping over. Sandra and I were introduced to each other about a year and a half ago by Monica. Since then we have become great friends and I love this gal! She has 5 kids and runs a photography business! She's nuts!

Photobucket

And Sandra is sleeping over because.....

10) Friday morning bright and early I leave with some of my gals to VEGAS!!! Going for the WPPI conference - it's a massive photography conference. I went last year and loved it - can't wait to go back! Here's a few photos form last year's trip...

Photobucket

and then I much prefer the countryside to the city so we like to escape...

Photobucket

Photobucket

And Tracy who came with us last year (we'll miss you! some excuse not to come - new baby!)

Photobucket

and can you spot Mel in this pic? (we'll miss you too! and Mel's excuse not to come is she's homeschooling her 5 kids!)

New Orleans 2008 - Door Collage

I have jsut sent out the previous e-mail about purchasing photos to help with Katrina efforts and have had a few requests already for the door collage photo. Two specific requests I've had are for the photo to be framed by me and also for a larger panormaic photo size than is currently available. If you are interested in these options also - let me know and I'll keep you informed as to prices and options!

New Orleans 2008

Photobucket

Last week, I had the opportunity to travel to New Orleans. While there, I was able to listen to the Salvation Army team speak who were part of the Hurricane Katrina relief team. The stories left me in tears. After I heard them speak, I approached one of them to ask if she would take me and show me first hand the Katrina hit areas of the city.

I was blown away by what still remains to be done. So many homes still in various stages of destruction. People still living in FEMA trailers. Sadness. Two and a half years later and as most of the world has moved on, the people of New Orleans are still trying to rebuild. Yes, there is much that has been done - by many volunteers and people from around the world. It is beautiful to see so many people who have contributed and helped out. But the need is still great.

I have a series of photos from New Orleans that I am selling to raise funds to contribute back to the Salvation army's Hurricane Katrina efforts. You can view them HERE or go directly HERE TO PUCRHASE If you have any questions or specific requests - just drop me a line! (The door collage is separated into folders by the size I have formatted it to as it is a bit of an unusual size.)

I am also in discussions about organizing a team to go down and offer help. They particularly need people with practical skills in home repairs. If you are interested in going down - drop me a line with "Katrina" in the subject line and I will let you know when details are firmed up.
